Installing mpi4py on Debian Squeeze

I want to do parallel computing on my desktop to take advantage of quad core.  Actually, I just need to test programs to be run on HPC clusters.  It is actually easy to set up a parallel computing environment.

Install a couple packages:

$ sudo aptitude install openmpi-bin libopenmpi-dev

The development file is necessary to build mpi4py against it.

Download the mpi4py source and install as usual:

$ tar -xvzf mpi4py-*.tar.gz
$ cd mpi4py-*
$ python setup.py build
$ sudo python setup.py install

That’s it.  The command mpirun is available for use.

    FYI, mpi4py has recently been ITP’ed, so it should be available as a package soon: http://lists.debian.org/debian-wnpp/2010/11/msg00749.html
